The Rise is a 735-acre hillside resort community master planned by EKISTICS. Taking advantage of the spectacular views and varied landscape of the Okanagan Valley, The Rise incorporates a diversity of low-density residential uses, resort commercial opportunities, a working vineyard, retail winery, and a comprehensive network of parks and trails surrounding the open fairways of the 18-hole Fred Couples Signature Course. Adjacent to both the historic YK Ranch and Indian Reserve #1, the new resort community required a thoughtful, open, and responsive planning process to ensure its sensitive integration into its surroundings.
EKISTICS was commissioned to create seven housing prototypes for the first phase of hillside housing for “The Rise” on a steeply sloping grassland overlooking Okanagan Lake. The EKISTICS Design process focused on responding to the unique landscape, the spectacular views and the particular nature of the Okanagan lifestyle. These unique floor plans combine the typical program of a house with intimate courtyards that function as external rooms, and spacious balconies and terraces that open out to the views. The process of design focused on the experience of the house rather than preconceived notions of a particular style. This process allowed the team to reconsider the plan and the form of the house responding to the specific needs of people living in or visiting the region.
With a development yield of 1,210 units, comprised of both residential and resort commercial accommodation, The Rise promises to be an exciting new neighbourhood and tourist destination for Vernon, British Columbia.
