As part of a three-year planning & design process to create the Lakes District and Schooner Cove Neighbourhood Plans, EKISTICS facilitated the design and development of a comprehensive public consultation strategy, including support materials and documentation.
In advance of the formal Plan submission in 2010, EKISTICS hosted more than 50 stakeholder meetings, three public open houses, three public design workshops, numerous meetings of the Community Advisory Committee and Regional District of Nanaimo staff, as well as ongoing consultation with the local community.
A Community Advisory Group (CAG) was established to ensure that interest groups and individuals – representing those most likely to be affected by development at Fairwinds – were given an opportunity to provide input to the Planning and Design Team as it moved forward with the preparation of comprehensive Neighbourhood Plans.
Prior to submission of a draft Plan, a Technical Advisory Committee was also formed to review draft Plans with municipal, provincial and federal agencies.
Through a transparent and inclusive public consultation process, the resulting Neighbourhood Plans represent a a sustainable balance of residential density, housing choice, community amenities and recreation, commercial opportunities, open spaces and conservation areas.
